What's involved
Why not just put it on the kerb
Most municipalities across the metro either won't take a mattress in regular collection or require it scheduled as a bulk item, and leaving one out can draw a fine. Mattresses also take up enormous landfill volume and don't compress, which is why recycling programmes exist for them specifically.
What recycling actually involves
A mattress gets dismantled into steel springs, foam, fibre and timber, and each stream goes somewhere different. Steel is the valuable part. Foam gets reprocessed into carpet underlay. It's genuinely one of the better recycling stories in bulky waste.
Bed bugs
Say so when you book. A suspected infestation changes how the mattress is wrapped and where it can go — it can't enter a recycling stream. It's a common situation and nobody's judging, but we need to know before it's in the truck.
